"Hey, You out there with the Gouldians!"

Dr Sarah Pryke is currently conducting research on the Gouldian Finch and would be very grateful for any information on the normal Gouldians in your possession. If you think you'd like to help her out then read on and drop her a line when you can. Remember anything that you do to help will ultimately aid the fight to help the wild Gouldians.

Basically, Sarah is looking for good, comprehensive records from aviculturists who are breeding Gouldian finches all over the world.
This to help with the research, hopefully by providing some answers to queries on the survival rates, breeding and the natural fitness of these birds.
However, there is one important aspect – all birds must by wild-type (red-, yellow- and black-headed) – NO mutants of any sort.

The type of information that is required includes:

1) Dates of birth and death of birds (with records on the different head colours).

2) Breeding success of different birds (again, with records of which head types were paired together) – this could include the number of offspring hatched and then fledged, as well as any other details on the offspring themselves (e.g. sex, head colours, and perhaps even their breeding success if available).

3) Housing conditions, such as records on the success (e.g. death rates, breeding success, etc.) of birds that are kept at different densities (i.e. alone or in colonies of different sizes and with different head colours).

Anyone who keeps such detailed life-histories of their birds would be fantastic help to the research, but to be honest any records (such as simple life spans and how you keep your birds) would be a great help.

If anyone is willing to share this information, and help the research on the Gouldian finch, please email Sarah on sarah.pryke@unsw.edu.au
